PM Albanese says dark day for Australia, security agencies investigating

At least 12 people were killed and almost 30 wounded when gunmen fired on a Jewish holiday event at Sydney's Bondi Beach on Sunday in what Australian police and officials described as a terrorist attack.
One suspected gunman was killed, and another was in a critical condition, New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon told a press conference. At least 29 people injured, including two police officers, were taken to hospital, he said.

Police were investigating whether a third gunman was involved in the shooting, and a bomb-disposal unit was working on several suspected improvised explosive devices, Lanyon said.
Mike Burgess, a top Australian intelligence official, said one of the suspected attackers was known to authorities but had not been deemed an immediate threat.
ISRAEL CRITICISES AUSTRALIA
Sunday's shootings were the most serious of a string of antisemitic attacks on synagogues, buildings, and cars in Australia since the beginning of Israel's war in Gaza in October 2023.
Mass shootings are rare in Australia, one of the world's safest countries. Sunday's attack was the worst such incident in the country since 1996, when a gunman killed 35 people at a tourist site in the southern state of Tasmania.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese convened a meeting of the country's national security council and condemned the attack, saying the evil that was unleashed was "beyond comprehension.
"This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which should be a day of joy, a celebration of faith," he said. "At this dark moment for our nation, our police and security agencies are working to determine anyone associated with this outrage."
Witnesses said the shooting at the famed beach on a hot summer's evening lasted about 10 minutes, sending hundreds of people scattering along the sand and into nearby streets and parks. Police said around 1,000 people had attended the Hanukkah event alone.
"I was just getting ready to go home, and, like, I was packing my bag, got my flip-flops, was ready to catch my bus, and then I started hearing the shots," said Bondi Junction resident Marcos Carvalho, 38.
His comments came as Thai fighter jets struck targets hours after U.S. President Donald Trump said he had brokered a new ceasefire.
"We all panicked and started running as well. So we left everything behind, like flip-flops, everything. We just ran through the hill," he said. "I must have heard, I don't know, maybe, like, 40, 50 shots."
Israeli President Isaac Herzog said Jewish people who had gone to light the first candle of the Hanukkah holiday on the beach had been attacked by "vile terrorists.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said he was appalled by the shooting and that Australia's government must "come to its senses" after countless warnings.
"These are the results of the antisemitic rampage in the streets of Australia over the past two years, with the antisemitic and inciting calls of 'Globalise the Intifada' that were realised today."
One of the world's most famous beaches, Bondi is typically crowded with locals and tourists.
"If we were targeted deliberately in this way, it's something of a scale that none of us could have ever fathomed. It's a horrific thing," Alex Ryvchin, co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, told Sky News, adding his media adviser had been wounded in the attack.
MAN SEEN TACKLING, DISARMING GUNMAN
Bondi resident Grace Mathew said she saw people running past her and heard gunshots.
"Initially, you just think, it's a beautiful day down by the beach," she said. "You sort of think that people are just having a good time. Then more people ran past and said there's a shooter, there's a mass shooting and they're killing people."
Muslim groups condemned the shooting.
"These acts of violence and crimes have no place in our society. Those responsible must be held fully accountable and face the full force of the law," the Australian National Imams Council, the Council of Imams NSW and the Australian Muslim community said in a statement.
"Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all those who witnessed or were affected by this deeply traumatic attack."
Videos circulating on X appeared to show people on the beach and nearby park scattering as multiple gunshots and police sirens could be heard. One video showed a man dressed in a black shirt firing a large weapon before being tackled by a man in a white T-shirt who wrestled the weapon off him. Another man was seen firing a weapon from a pedestrian bridge.
Another video showed two men pressed onto the ground by uniformed police on a small pedestrian bridge. Officers could be seen trying to resuscitate one of the men. Reuters confirmed the videos from verified corroborating footage showing the same men.
The attack came almost exactly 11 years after a lone gunman took 18 people hostage at the Lindt Cafe in Sydney. Two hostages and the gunman were killed after a 16-hour standoff.
"Australians are in deep mourning tonight, with hateful violence striking at the heart of an iconic Australian community, a place we all know so well and love, Bondi," said Sussan Ley, the leader of Australia's opposition Liberal Party.

Syrian who killed Americans was part of security forces
Says Syrian ministry
Syria's interior ministry said yesterday the gunman who killed three Americans in the central Palmyra region the previous day was a member of the security forces who was to have been fired for extremism.
Two US troops and a civilian interpreter died in what the Syrian government described as a "terrorist attack" on Saturday, while Washington said it had been carried out by an Islamic State group (IS) militant who was then killed.

The Syrian authorities "had decided to fire him" from the security forces before the attack for holding "extremist Islamist ideas" and had planned to do so yesterday, interior ministry spokesman Noureddine al-Baba said.
A Syrian security official told AFP yesterday that "11 members of the general security forces were arrested and brought in for questioning after the attack". The gunman had belonged to the security forces "for more than 10 months."

Germany says foils Islamist plot to attack Christmas market

German authorities said Saturday they had arrested five men on suspicion of involvement in an Islamist plot to plough a vehicle into people at a Christmas market.
Officials have been on high alert during the festive season, after a deadly car-ramming attack at a market in the city of Magdeburg last Christmas shocked the nation.
Google News LinkFor all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel.
Police and prosecutors said they had detained an Egyptian, three Moroccans and a Syrian on Friday over the plan to carry out the attack in southern Bavaria state.
Investigators suspect "an Islamist motive" for the plot, according to the statement.
The Egyptian, aged 56, was an imam at a mosque in the Dingolfing-Landau district, German newspaper Bild reported.
According to authorities, he had called for an attack to be carried out on a Christmas market in the area "using a vehicle in order to kill or injure as many people as possible".
The Moroccans -- aged 30, 28 and 22 -- allegedly then agreed to carry out the attack while the Syrian, 37, encouraged them.
All the suspects were brought before a magistrate on Saturday after their arrest and are in custody.
Joachim Herrmann, state interior minister in Bavaria, told Bild the "excellent cooperation between our security services" had helped to prevent "a potentially Islamist-motivated attack".
Authorities did not say where the suspects were arrested.
It was also not clear when the attack was supposed to take place, how detailed the plans were, and which market was to be targeted.
- Rising security costs -
Last year's attack in Magdeburg, which saw a car barrel through a crowded market, killed six people and wounded more than 300.
A Saudi doctor -- who is a critic of Islam and an adherent of far-right views and radical conspiracy theories -- went on trial last month accused of carrying out the rampage.
Taleb Jawad al-Abdulmohsen, a 51-year-old psychiatrist, has admitted ploughing a rented SUV through the market.
In 2016 an Islamist drove a truck into a crowd at a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people.
The rampages have fuelled a heated debate about the security of the festive installations, which are hosted by nearly every town and consist of stalls with merchants selling gifts, hot mulled wine, sausages and sweets.
Some cities have cancelled the beloved winter tradition because of the mounting costs and complexity of ensuring security.
Magdeburg's Christmas market went ahead this year but only received approval shortly before opening.

2 dead, 8 critical in shooting at US Ivy League school

A gunman killed two people and critically wounded eight others on Saturday afternoon at prestigious Brown University, authorities said, urging people in the area to remain in lockdown as the attacker was still at large.
"I can confirm that there are two individuals who have died this afternoon, and there are another eight in critical status, though stable," Providence, Rhode Island Mayor Brett Smiley told a news conference.

The shooting took place at the Barus and Holley building, home to the engineering and physics departments, on the campus of the Ivy League university.
Multiple exams had been scheduled to take place in the building at the time of the shooting, the university said.
Law enforcement described the suspect as a man dressed all in black.
"We're utilizing every resource possible to find this suspect. The shelter in place is still in order and I urge people to take that very seriously. Please do not come to the area," Deputy Police Chief Timothy O'Hara said.
The gunman was last seen leaving the building, and no weapon had been recovered, authorities said.
Brown sent an emergency alert at 4:22 pm (2122 GMT) reporting "an active shooter near Barus and Holley Engineering."
"Lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden until further notice," it said.
Law enforcement and first responders swarmed the scene, with local news station WPRI reporting clothing and blood on the sidewalk.
The FBI was providing "all capabilities necessary," Director Kash Patel said on X.
Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also responding.
Katie Sun told the Brown Daily Herald student newspaper she was studying in a nearby building when she heard gunfire. She ran to her dorm, leaving all her belongings behind.
"It was honestly quite terrifying. The shots seemed like they were coming from...where the classrooms are," she said.
US President Donald Trump had been briefed on the shooting.
"What a terrible thing it is," he said. "All we can do right now is pray for the victims."
Brown University in Providence, near Boston, has about 11,000 students.
The shooting is the latest in a long line of school attacks in the US, where attempts to restrict easy access to firearms face political deadlock.
